One fashion item never to go out of fashion are ladies tights. Fashions continually change but tights are likely to remain an essential item of clothing for women, even if materials change. Following the invention of nylon and the meteoric rise to fame of “nylons” in the 1960’s, ladies tights have become an essential wardrobe item for millions of women all over the world.
Nylon became a cheaper alternative to silk for the manufacture of tights and stockings but nowadays they are made using various affordable and comfortable materials. The use of Lycra prevents tights going baggy at the ankles, which was a common problem for ladies in the 1950s; it also adds the stretch that keeps our tights up without wrinkling! We’ve even moved on to developing shaping bodywear, tights that help to tone and shape certain areas, such as the bum and tum.
A common material for winter tights is wool, as it keeps you warm and cosy, and comes in lots of different colours. Wool tights are the perfect way to look stylish but stay warm during the winter months, and some very current colours include rich autumnal reds and deep, luscious purples.
When the weather warms up but not enough to bare all, good old trusty opaque tights are ideal. A far cry from the days of sheer nylons, opaque tights have served women well for the last few decades. They’re available in loads of different deniers and many varying colours.
The thickness of the tights is measured by the denier, this is actually the thickness of the weave and the higher the denier the thicker the tights are. Opaque tights are generally 40 denier or higher, while sheer tights range from 5 to 30 denier, and often have reinforced toes and gussets.
Sheer tights are also made from lots of different materials as the denier is ascertained by the thickness of the weave and does not differ depending on the material they’re made from.
Whether you prefer opaque tights, support tights, sheer tights, coloured tights, footless tights, or suspender tights there are so many different tights out there to choose from that the list is almost endless.
If you feel unsexy wearing tights there is always the option of hold ups or stockings. Hold ups and stockings are often worn by women for special occasions instead of tights as they do the same job but feel so much sexier. Like ladies tights, stockings and hold ups are now made in a vast range of colours, different materials and deniers so you should be able to buy something suitable for every outfit.
Ladies tights are set to remain in the wardrobes of most women, as while our taste in colours and fashions may change, this staple item will remain in our hearts!
